Retaining Walls

Reinforced Concrete Retaining Walls

We can construct retaining walls of any size, to suit your external works and the ground conditions. Where founding strata is at a significant depth, we can provide a piled retaining wall base, to ensure that the retaining wall is stable.

Retaining walls are used to create a vertical wall which retains the earth, providing significant level changes across a site or plot. We typically construct cantilever RC walls to ensure that we reduce the amount of resources used, and minimise the cost to our clients.

Generally, these reinforced concrete walls are brick faced, rendered, or have a timber fence affixed. This provides a choice of aesthetic options to suit your site.

Reinforced Concrete Retaining Walls - Split Level Plots

These RC walls are the same as the walls above, however, we can integrate the retaining wall with the ground beams of a plot, providing a 'Split Level' plot. These plots are typically found on sites with vast gradient changes, as a way to rationalise the levels across the site.

There are usually additional requirements for these plots from the warranty provider to ensure that the plots are protected against water ingress. There are various ways of tanking and waterproofing these plots, and we are happy to arrange these measures as required.

Gabion Retaining Walls

Gabion retaining walls are constructed using a row of wire mesh baskets joined together, filled with gabion stone. We provide a hand placed front face to ensure that we provide an aesthetic finish.

Gabion baskets can be constructed in a range of heights from 200mm retained though to heights in excess of 7m if required.

Typically gabion walls are constructed using 3mm galvanised wire mesh baskets, however, if desired, these can be amended for pvc coated galvanised mesh, or 4mm galvanised wire mesh, to meet any specific requirement.

Gabion baskets can be used in areas where typical RC walls would not be suitable or cost effective. They do not require facing, saving costs on successive trades, i.e. bricklayers, and they can be constructed with fence post sockets to allow the erection of a fence to the top level.

Masonry Cavity Fill Retaining Walls

Masonry cavity fill retaining walls are typically used where the retained height is less than 1200mm.

They are constructed from 2 layers of brickwork, sometimes featuring reinforcement in the cavity if required. The concrete is then poured into the cavity, using the brickwork as a permanent shutter.

We provide the RC base for these walls, including starter bars and reinforcement if required.

Trench Block Retaining Walls

Trench block retaining walls are typically used for low retained heights. They work on the principle of mass, as they provide a large amount of weight to retain the earth.

We can provide the bases for these retaining walls, leaving them ready for your bricklayers to construct the blockwork.

King Post Retaining Walls

King post retaining walls can be used for temporary or permanent retention of ground, in most conditions, with typical height retentions of around 5m.

Depending on the ground conditions, the posts can either be drilled and concreted into place, or piled.

Once the posts have been installed, the retaining wall assemby is as simple as lowering precast hollowcore panels into place.

When used for permanent retention, these walls are usually faced to provide a more aesthetic look for the final wall.
